Thursday, July 11—My Go-To Place on Cyber Club: Singin’ in the Rain. Singin’ in the Rain often ranks as the best film musical ever made. The film tells the story of silent film stars as they navigate Hollywood’s transition from the silent era to “talkies.” While Singin’ in the Rain was not filmed in Chicago, many cast members are from or have strong connections to the Windy City. Join Kelli Marshall of Chicago Movie Tours as we explore Chicago’s rain-inspired sculpture and celebrate this delightfully entertaining Hollywood musical.

Thursday, July 18—My Go-To Place on Cyber Club: Classical Music, Part IV. Join Kurt Loeffler for the final part in his 4-part lecture series on classical music. This lecture will look at contemporary classical music which composers like George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copland who infused their work with jazz and other popular styles unique to the United States.

Thursday, August 8—My Go-To Place on Cyber Club: Women in Comedy. Stand-up comedy has been a celebrated form of American performance since the mid-twentieth century. But stand-up’s rich history is often told without some of the major women comics who have been cracking wise since before ‘stand-up’ had a name. This lecture looks at the hilarious—and often subversive—history of women in comedy. Join Professor Grace Kessler Overbeke of One Day University for this pre-recorded presentation that takes a deeper look at some remarkable women pioneers from Cornelia Otis Skinner and Moms Mabley, to Jean Carroll, Phyllis Diller, and Joan Rivers.

Join Kelli Marshall of Chicago Movie Tours as we indulge in tales about a white booth once nestled inside a glamorous Chicago hotel restaurant, where classic Hollywood movie stars converged. Then, turn to the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, as you uncover how food offers insight into its characters’ lives. We’ll also visit the University of Chicago and Chicago’s Union Station which serve as backdrops for our culinary movie journey.

Thursday, August 22—My Go-To Place on Cyber Club: Elvis Presley. Join Kurt Loefller as we explore Elvis Presley’s personal life and professional career from his humble beginnings in Mississippi to his mansion in Graceland. Elvis was hugely influenced by African American blues and gospel music and country music. He successfully fused them to create the earliest form of Rock and Roll: Rockabilly.

Thursday, August 29—My Go-To Place on Cyber Club:Chagall: Love, War & Exile.We’ll explores a lesser-known period in the artist’s career from the rise of fascism, through years spent in Paris, and then in exile in New York. Marc Chagall created his unique style by drawing on the Russian Christian icon tradition, Cubism, and Surrealism. Join the Illinois Holocaust Museum as we explore this exhibit illuminating an artist deeply responsive to the suffering of war and to his own personal losses and intimate sorrows.
