CJE SeniorLife Hosting Resource Fair For Families Of Adult Children With Disabilities CHICAGO, IL Sept 2, 2009 - At 84-years-old, Irene still lives at home, but her own health problems have made it difficult to get around and she does not have a large support group of family and friends to help her. Moving to a long-term care setting would be a logical choice, but it isn’t an option for Irene; her adult son Steven, who lives with her, is developmentally disabled and she is his sole caregiver. The role is taking its toll physically and emotionally.
Where can someone like Irene turn to for needed support for herself and to find information and resources for her adult child with disabilities? The answer is Linkages, a unique program that addresses the issues, needs, and concerns of older adults who are the primary caregivers of an adult child with a disability. CJE SeniorLife is hosting the Linkages Resource Fair for Families of People with Disabilities, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Bernard Horwich Building, 3003 W. Touhy Ave., Chicago. Adult caregivers will have the opportunity to talk with agencies that provide services to people with disabilities and also consult with attorneys who specialize in the area of future planning. For more information or to pre-register, call 773/508-1694. With pre-registration, families are allowed 15-minute private consultations with attorneys and specialists in the field to discuss specific family situation or need. Consultants: Attorney Darcy Chamberlin – Special Needs Trusts; Attorney Jeffrey Rabin – Social Security Disability; Attorney Sherry Fox – Guardianship issues; Sherri Schneider – Government Benefits. “Family caregivers often ask, ‘Who is going to do what I’m doing after I’m gone,’” says Rosann Corcoran, Linkages coordinator. “Sometimes all families need is simply more information, support and referral sources. We work to educate families on their options, help them put a long-term plan in place, and assist with the legal planning for the future.” CJE SeniorLife is one of five Jewish Federation agencies that participate in the Linkages program. Services include exploring resource options, providing assistance with future planning and advocacy.
